Vitamins To Keep Your Cats Healthy & Happy

Just like humans, our feline friends need to make sure they're getting their daily dose of vitamins in order to stay healthy and happy. While it's true that cats are notoriously finicky eaters, there are a few key vitamins that every cat should have in their diet in order to maintain optimum health. For our feline friends, a diet rich in nutrients helps to keep them healthy and free from harmful parasites, like fleas.

Thiamine or Vitamin B1

Thiamine can help with our cat’s cognitive behavior. It also helps battle against thiamine deficiency, something that’s very common to cats and causes vomiting, and impaired vision if they don’t get enough of it in their diet. In addition, this vitamin helps to reduce fleas on the skin by promoting the release of sulfur, which is toxic to fleas, through the skin. It is commonly found in liver, meat, brewer's yeast, dairy, and whole grains. Since it’s water soluble, thiamine is very safe and is unlikely to overdose.

Niacin or Vitamin B3

Niacin promotes a healthy coat and skin in cats. This vitamin is also beneficial to our cat’s nervous system and can supply them with the energy that they need on a daily basis. It can also help with our cat’s digestive system. There are numerous foods that are rich in niacin, including meat, fish, eggs, and poultry, as well as avocado, peanuts, whole grains, mushrooms, peas, and potatoes.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 works to ensure that your pet’s nervous system functions properly. It also helps to produce red blood cells and maintain a healthy immune system. Studies have also shown that this vitamin can help maintain your cat’s kidney health. Among animal products, B12 can be found in meat, fish, and especially liver.

Vitamin E

Our cats need vitamin E to develop strong muscles and improve their circulatory system. This vitamin also aids in healing wounds. In addition, it helps to protect against free radicals, which can damage cells, leading to disease. A number of studies have also shown that this vitamin has the potential to improve muscular function. Dark leafy greens, animal liver, animal fat and plant oils are good sources of vitamin E.
