Studies have shown that owning a cat can contribute to your overall health and well-being in a variety of ways. Here are just a few of the ways that cats can keep you healthy and happy.

One of the most important ways that cats can contribute to your health is by reducing your stress and anxiety levels. Numerous studies have shown that interacting with animals can help to reduce stress hormones like cortisol. And what could be more relaxing than snuggling up with a purring kitty? Lower Blood Pressure

In addition to reducing stress, cats can also help to lower your blood pressure. High blood pressure is a serious condition that can lead to heart disease, stroke, and other health problems. Luckily, owning a cat can help lower blood pressure. 

A study found that people with hypertension who spent 30 minutes a day interacting with their cats had significantly lower blood pressure readings and heart rates than those who didn't spend time with their cats. 

Their Purring Promotes Healing

Studies have shown that the low-frequency vibrations produced by purring can help to promote healing in joints, tendons, and muscles. In addition, purring has been shown to help reduce stress levels and improve overall circulation.

The study, which was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, found that kids who lived with cats were less likely to develop allergies than those who didn't. 

One theory is that exposure to cat allergens early in life can help to build up immunity. Another possibility is that the vibrations from a purring cat can help to strengthen bones and improve healing. Whatever the reason, there's no doubt that cats have a special skill when it comes to keeping people healthy.

Enhanced Sleep Quality

If you're one of the millions of people who share their bed with a cat, you may not be surprised to learn that you're not alone. Recent studies have found that people in the UK prefer to sleep with their cats over their partners.

It's not just because they're cute, although that's certainly part of it, the truth is that cats make excellent bedmates. They're quiet, they don't take up much space, and they always seem to know when you need a little cuddle. 

A recent study from the Mayo Clinic Center for Sleep Medicine found that 41 percent of people who slept with a cat said that it led to better sleep, while only 20 percent said that it was disruptive. 

It's not entirely clear why cats make such good bed partners, but it may have something to do with their calming presence or their tendency to stay still for long periods. Whichever the case may be, it's clear that many people believe that when it comes to finding a good bed mate, their furry friend trumps their human one.

Improve Your Mood

Not only do cats reduce stress and lower blood pressure, but they can also improve your mood.  One study shows that spending time with a cat boosts your production of serotonin, a chemical that boosts feelings of well-being and lowers your cortisol levels. 

Cats can also improve your mental health. One study found that people who owned cats were less likely to experience depression than those who didn't own cats.

Who would have thought that all those hours spent watching cat videos on YouTube would be good for you? According to a study of over 7,000 people by Indiana University Bloomington, watching cat videos boosts viewers’ energy and positive emotions while decreasing negative feelings. 

So if you’ve been feeling down lately, or just need a pick-me-up, try watching a few minutes of your favorite feline friends. You may just find yourself feeling more cheerful in no time.
